A well-known local cyclist is improving slowly after suffering critical injuries in a collision with a car.
Neil Wilson, secretary of Berwick Wheelers, was airlifted to Newcastle RVI after the collision on the B6354 near Ford, last Wednesday.
He underwent an operation and remains in the intensive care unit but his wife, Suzanne, posted a positive update on the Wheelers’ facebook page.
She wrote: “Neil’s had a positive day - off the ventilator, starting to fidget and open eyes and responding to basic instructions. Still a long way to go but all going in the right direction.”
The family has also thanked everyone for their messages of support over the last few days.
Berwick Wheelers posted: “Every one of us has I am sure spent some time thinking of Neil Wilson. Sending him our best wishes for a speedy recovery.”
Neil is assets development manager for the Glendale Gateway Trust in Wooler.
The accident happened at the junction of the B6354 and the B6533 (on the road between the A697 and Ford) around 5pm. Paramedics from the North East Ambulance Service worked with medics from the Great North Air Ambulance.
Police are appealing for witnesses to contact them. Anyone who saw the collision or may have information to help is asked to contact police on 101 ext 69191 quoting reference 812 30/09/15.
