Popularity of new WI is exceeding expectations

Amble WI was formally created on Monday, January 11, and has already managed to attract 35 members.

It is positive news for the organisation, considering the town’s previous WI, which operated for more than 90 years, folded a decade ago due to dwindling numbers.

Secretary Pam Milburn is delighted with the start and hopes the group can go from strength to strength.

She said: “The start we have had has exceeded our expectations. To have 35 members already is fantastic – we didn’t expect to attract that many. We have a mix of ages ranges too, which is brilliant, and we will always welcome new members.

“The aim of the WI is to share knowledge with other women, coming together socially and to learn new skills.”

Looking at the year ahead, Pam says the group is aiming to have a day out, possibly in August, and to hold a Christmas meal. The organisation has also applied for a spot at the arts and handmade craft fair, which will include community stalls, at this year’s Amble Puffin Festival.

The group meets on the second Monday of each month, at 7pm, in the United Reformed Church, on Wellwood Street. Next month’s speaker will be Dr Liz O’Donnell who will give a talk about the Suffragettes.

Last week, Amble Town Council agreed to give £100 to the branch to go towards the cost of speakers.
