Tributes paid to Lib Dem peer and former Northumberland councillor

Tributes have been paid to Northumberland peer Baroness Diana Maddock following her death aged 75.

The wife of former Berwick MP, Lord Beith, was MP for Christchurch from 1993 to 1997 and president of the Liberal Democrats from 1998 to 2000.

She was elevated to the House of Lords in 1997, where she most recently she served as Deputy Chief Whip for the Liberal Democrat group.

She also represented Berwick North on Northumberland County Council from 2005 to 2008 and Berwick Borough Council from 2007 to 2009.

Acting leader of the Liberal Democrats, Ed Davey said: “Diana helped shape the heart of the Liberal Democrat party. Her warmth, expertise and leadership will be missed by all who knew her.”

Leader of the Liberal Democrats in the House of Lords, Dick Newby, added: “Our thoughts go out to her husband Alan and her family at this immensely difficult time.”
