Northumberland County Council has reported a reduction in damage and vandalism at the facilities at the entrance to Seafield car park.

Council officer Terry Harkins, in a letter to North Sunderland Parish Council, reported: “We met with cleaning staff today and they are really pleased with the difference locking the toilets up at night is making.

“There has been no damage or vandalism and it is making their job so much easier.”

He thanked parish councillor Alan Trotter for taking on the task of closing the toilets every night.

Coun Trotter said: “I haven’t had any comeback from any members of the public, although this is a quiet time of the year. In the summer it might be different.

“They were quite keen to lock the toilets up at 5pm but I thought we should let people come out of the pubs until about 8pm and then lock them and that seems to have worked.”

Coun David Donaldson said: “Alan’s efforts are much appreciated and it does the village good that we’ve got them open that bit later for tourists because there are people here all year round now, it’s not just a summer season.”

Parish councillors also praised county council staff for their litter-picking efforts.

“They’re doing a good job,” said Coun Trotter. “I saw them picking out litter from the bushes in front of the toilets.”

Coun George Price also saw them tidying the Stone Close area.
