Plans have been submitted for 445 new homes to be built in the second phase of a Killingworth ‘Masterplan’.

Banks Property has submitted the plans to North Tyneside Council, which it claims will support nearly 300 jobs.

The ‘Killingworth Masterplan’, a 2017 project to see around 2,000 homes constructed on the moor, saw a major boost for the developer earlier this month with the council permitting the construction of almost 1,000 houses between Bellway Homes, Banks Property and Northumberland Estates.

Now, Banks Property has brought forward its second phase scheme for an additional 445 homes.

According to Banks Property, the scheme would support around 117 full-time jobs per year over a predicted seven-year construction period and 167 indirect jobs. The Banks plan also includes 12.5 hectares of open space, a play park, improved footpaths and cycle routes, along with electric vehicle charging points.

Jamilah Hassan, community relations manager at the Banks Group, said: “The Killingworth Moor development will help to address the growing need to increase the supply of homes in North Tyneside, so that people are able to stay in or move to the area, and we’re excited to now be bringing our plans for phase two of the project forward.

“The mix of different housing types will make this development accessible to families of all ages and the supporting infrastructure that will be delivered across Killingworth Moor will help to create the type of vibrant community that we’ve always planned for this site.”

It is expected that the second phase planning application will come to North Tyneside Council’s planning committee later in 2024 – with work scheduled to start by early 2026, if approved.

However, the plans to develop Killingworth Moor have proven controversial. At the most recent Killingworth Moor planning hearing at North Tyneside Council’s Cobalt HQ, councillors were jeered from the public gallery after voting in favour of the first phase.

In addition, two local campaign groups, ‘Stop Killing Killingworth’ and ‘The Killingworth Village Residents Association’ have both opposed the ‘Masterplan’ citing concerns with overdevelopment, infrastructure and the loss of green space.

Previous applications to build on the moor also amassed 287 public objections on the council’s website.
