Seahouses councillors call for new parking restrictions to be implemented before tourist season

Parish councillors in Seahouses have called for new parking restrictions to be implemented before tourists begin to descend on the village in large numbers.

The changes on Main Street are to be carried out by Northumberland County Council this spring with the aim of reducing congestion problems – despite the presence of double yellow lines on both sides of the street.

The project had been on hold until the completion of a £3million refurbishment programme at the harbour.

Coun David Donaldson, speaking at a North Sunderland Parish Council meeting, said: “The harbour work is finished now and it will be February half term soon.”

The plan is for Main Street to become a single yellow line, with no parking in the day. However, parking in the evening and early morning will still be allowed. This will also coincide with more disabled parking in the main car park, so blue badge holders who can currently park on the Main Street through the day don't lose out.

“That hasn’t been done yet,” reported Coun Alan Trotter. It is hoped the move will enable buses to stop on Main Street again.

Meanwhile, councillors have called for drainage issues on the street to be investigated.

Coun Donaldson said: “The drains on the north side of Main Street are all blocked up. The water is standing level with nothing going down.

“Main Street would be flooded were it not for the slope down to the harbour.”

Chairman, Coun Geoffrey Stewart, said there were also problems with drains on North Street.
