Parish council holds 'positive' meeting with Northumberland County Council but frustrations remain

Wooler Parish Council representatives held a virtual meeting with county council leader Glen Sanderson and several officers.

The meeting was arranged after the parish council voiced its concerns at a perceived lack of action on a number of highways issues.

Parish councillors have been calling for a pedestrian crossing point at the Co-op on Market Place and raised concerns about congestion on narrow sections of Ramsey’s Lane and the approach to a new housing development on the Chatton road.

Cllr Mark Mather, chairman, said: “It was quite a frustrating meeting in terms of trying to get our views across but I came away feeling more positive.”

However, updates from the county council which had been promised in time for its December meeting were not forthcoming.

"It’s very disappointing that already we’re chasing the county council again for things they have promised,” said Cllr Mather. “Let’s hope we can work together moving forward.”

Cllr Anthony Murray, county councillor for Wooler, added: “It was a positive meeting compared with what we have had up to now but I still thought Northumberland County Council were hiding behind their shadows.”

Cllr Mather thanked Rob Murfin, director of planning, for a helpful explanation on the planning process. Training will also be offered to parish councillors.

Council leader Glen Sanderson has previously outlined a commitment to addressing local concerns and made assurances that the parish council’s comments have been taken on board.

Meanwhile, concerns were raised by a local resident about damage to grass verges on Common Road by heavy goods vehicles. It will be reported to the county council.

"The road is in a really bad state,” said Cllr Kevan Curry. “There is enough verge there to widen the road but we all know that is not going to happen.”

Cllr Joyce Robertson also complained about the condition of The Peth where work is being carried out by Northumbrian Water. Councillors were told the road is due to be resurfaced once the work is finished.
