Northumberland parish council to be abolished and split between its neighbours

At last week’s full meeting of Northumberland County Council, it was agreed that Cartington Parish Council be abolished and that Rothbury and Thropton councils take over responsibility for its area.

A report to councillors explained that the parish council ‘believes that as it is a small parish with only 95 electors represented by five councillors and with limited resources, it has very few responsibilities other than to discuss planning applications.

‘The parish council feels that the electors of Cartington would be better served by the proposed division between Rothbury and Thropton Parish Councils.’

A consultation on the proposals sparked three objections, but it had the support of both Rothbury and Thropton councils as well as the area’s ward councillor, Steven Bridgett.

Alongside this, councillors also agreed that Rothbury Parish Council’s boundary with Whitton & Tosson parish should be amended to allow it to make decisions in relation to Jubilee Crescent, a change which would affect around 102 electors.

In addition, an anomaly with the current boundary has been identified in that the gardens of 1-2 Cobble Court and Banklands, South Terrace are currently located within Whitton & Tosson, while the properties are within Rothbury, so it was agreed to move the gardens into the Rothbury parish too.

A consultation on these changes received no responses.
