A parcel of land in the grounds of the former St Mary’s C of Middle School has been potentially earmarked for a new cemetery by Belford Parish Council.

Preparations for a community asset transfer from the Newcastle Diocese are now being made.

An initial meeting with an officer from Northumberland County Council took place on Thursday to set out the process to be followed.

There will be a period of community consultation before a decision is made.

Letters of support are also being sought from the MP, local county councillor and local community groups.

Culture Creative, the outdoor events specialist which now occupies the former school buildings, has indicated it has no interest in the wider grounds.

Coun Guy Renner-Thompson, parish chairman, said: “The county want to give us the field at the same time as the diocese transfers the school building.”

If the cemetery scheme proceeds, a new access route is under consideration.

In the meantime, the parish council will try to make local grass-cutting arrangements for the coming months. It was felt this could be cheaper than getting the county council to cut it.

Coun Ian Carruthers also told a meeting of Belford Parish Council that clearance work in the existing cemetery had identified a number of new plots.

County council officers are also currently working to provide a safe walking route to Belford Primary School through the grounds of the former middle school.
