More visitors to Bamburgh predicted after Countryfile appearance

Even more visitors to Bamburgh have been predicted after the village’s starring role on BBC One’s Countryfile.

"It was a very good programme,” said Bamburgh Parish Council chairman Barbara Brook. “The beaches looked empty which I am sure will encourage more people to come.

"It looked stunning but we have still got huge problems with the amount of people that are about.”

It was among issues discussed by the parish council including the installation of temporary toilets in the main car park.

Cllr Brook said: “I am sure everyone was very pleased to see the portable toilets arriving because it was a problem with just having the toilets in Church Street which were totally inadequate for the amount of people.

"Seahouses have got extra loos too. When I went through Seahouses today the queue was absolutely incredible so it is a problem but it’s been solved in Bamburgh as far as I can see.”

Further enquiries are to be made to establish who might be responsible for maintenance work at the lighthouse.

“We got an email from the coastguard to say the steps down to the lighthouse along The Wynding were deteriorating and they were under the impression that Bamburgh Parish Council would help with the cost of repairing them,” said Cllr Brook.

It was suggested that it could be a project for the Coast Care environmental team.

New streetlamps for Radcliffe Road are on order.

Letters are also to be sent to residents of Lindisfarne Avenue about the possible introduction of a residents’ parking permit scheme.

"All the statutory consultees have come back with no objections so it’s up to the residents now,” said Cllr Guy Renner-Thompson.

Several volunteers have come forward to carry out litter-picking and they will be provided with hi-viz jackets, pickers and gloves.

Councillors also discussed the possible installation of a bench to mark the coronavirus pandemic but put the idea on hold because they felt it was too soon.

The village handyman is to be asked to advise on repairs needed to the rabbit-damaged surface in the play park.
