Last year, 22 headstones were laid down because they were in need of repair.

Beadnell Parish Council has managed to trace some, but not all, of the families responsible for the memorials.

The parish council is now considering finding out how much it would cost to do work on some of the memorials where relatives have not been traced.

“We could then ask for a quote, not to repair them but to improve them,” said Coun Jen Hall. “The way they have been knocked over means the base sticks up which looks clumsy.”

She suggested waiting until the spring for more relatives to make contact before agreeing a course of action.

Chairman Alison Nation said she would also seek advice on how the council might be able to improve some of the uneven paths.
