Appeal made for volunteers to help plant 6,000 flower bulbs in Wooler

Some 5,000 crocus bulbs and 1,000 daffodil bulbs have been bought by Wooler Parish Council.

The intention is to plant them along the riverside and on the main approaches to the town from the south and east.

The bulb planting is taking place on Saturday, October 31 and Sunday, November 1 from 10am to 3pm.

Cllr Mark Mather, parish council chairman, said: “We’re looking for volunteers to come and help.”

Covid-19 safety measures will be in place, with volunteers split into separate groups.

"There will be no more than six people together and volunteers will be allocated a team to work within,” said Cllr Mather.

"We will provide hand sanitiser, gloves, masks and hi-viz jackets.”

Meanwhile, new benches have been installed at the riverside and four weeping willows planted. They have been funded by the fountain and clock winders groups.

"That’s the South Road project just about finished, apart from the bulbs,” said Cllr Mather. “We’ve had constantly good feedback on the work we’ve done at the riverside.”

Its popularity has let to some parking issues opposite the fire station. Police have issued cones to prevent parking and the parish council has plans to put up signage asking drivers not to park on the grass.

"We’ll just have to monitor the situation but it’s quite nice to see a little bit of hustle and bustle on that South Road,” said Cllr Mather.
