Mrs Trevelyan, who was appointed to Boris Johnson’s Cabinet this week, had been keen to inspect the upgrades to the hotel and service station by owners Jim and Jacqui Davidson and discuss how the major forthcoming works might affect its business.

She said: “It was great to meet Jim and Jacqui and to understand how their business works and the impact any A1 roadworks might have on the business.

“Purdy Lodge is a north Northumberland institution, known by many local motorists and tourists over the years as a welcome stop over when travelling between Edinburgh and London. The service station also has provided local rural residents with the basic commodities they need.”

“The dualling of the A1 will cause some disruption but I know the Highways England team will be working hard to minimise that.”
