Police have been taking action to target speeding and dangerous driving after concerns were raised by residents.

Officers have carried out speed-checks throughout the Morpeth sector, including Widdrington, Mitford, Scots Gap, Abbeyfields, Ulgham, Red Row and Acklington.

Of the 437 vehicles that were speed-checked, only two were found to be speeding. The drivers were issued with warning letters.

Morpeth officers also worked alongside those from HM Customs and Excise and VOSA to carry out stop-checks, looking for unsafe or dangerous vehicles.

Drivers of 26 vehicles were given safety-advisory notices, six prohibitions were issued and three were dealt with for minor road-traffic offences.

Acting Neighbourhood Inspector Sharon Wilmore-Greaves said: “It’s positive that we only found a small number of drivers speeding and committing offences, but we will continue to focus on the issue for as long as our communities tell us that it is a concern.”
