Northumbria Police is on the lookout for local people to get involved in its Community Speedwatch scheme.

Volunteers will receive relevant training, support and specialist equipment to enable them to monitor traffic speed in areas where local residents have said they are concerned speeding is an issue.

Motorists who are caught driving above the speed limit by Community Speedwatch receive a letter from police; those caught more than once will be visited at home by an officer.

Police use the information gained by volunteers to identify areas where enforcement action needs to be taken to tackle speeding.

The scheme was first introduced in Northumberland in 2011 and after its success it was rolled out across the force in 2014 with a number of schemes adopted across Northumberland, North Tyneside, Newcastle, Gateshead, South Tyneside and Sunderland.

Police are now inviting more volunteers to come forward and sign up to the initiative.

T/Superintendent Sarah Pitt said: "Community Speedwatch volunteers provide a valuable contribution to the work of police to help tackle issues with speeding.

"The scheme gives people the opportunity to get involved with their local community and address speeding issues within their neighbourhood.

"Volunteers are given training, support and specialist equipment so they can record the speed of passing vehicles and are situated in locations that have been identified by members of the community as areas they are concerned speeding is an issue.

"The information gained by the scheme is incredibly useful to police as it us helps identify areas where we need to take enforcement action to tackle speeding."
