Police name 16-year-old boy who died after cliff fall in Northumberland

Police have named the boy who died after reportedly falling from cliffs at Spittal Point, Berwick, during the night as 16-year-old Joshua Smith from the Berwick area.

Enquiries are ongoing into to establish the circumstances around the death, however police believe there was no third party involvement.

Northumbria Police said the death ‘has been referred to the IPCC in line with protocol’.

Police were alerted at 3.06am after reports from the North East Ambulance Service that a person had fallen at Spittal Point, Berwick.

Emergency services attended and the teenager was recovered from the sea. He was taken to Wansbeck General Hospital where he later died.

A rescue operation had been launched earlier to search for the boy. Anyone who may have seen teenage boy in area of the cliffs by Spittal Point in early hours of Sunday, April 5, is asked to contact police on 101 ext 69191 quoting reference number 181 05/04/15.
