The event was organised by Longhoughton Parish Council. A total of 65kg of rubbish was collected from Longhoughton village, including the quarry bridal way, while 38kg was picked up from Boulmer beach.

Thanks have been given to everyone who took part – such as villagers and RAF and Co-op staff – as well as to McDonald’s in Alnwick for supplying fresh fruit, water, juice and muffins for the volunteers, and to Bill Pringle, from Northumberland County Council, for supplying the picking equipment.

A youngster called Thomas won the children’s prize for picking up the most unusual object after he collected what is believed to be the remains of a tree swing.
