PLANS: Traffic must be addressed

Congratulations are in order to all those involved with the plans for the Column Field.

It is a great coup to secure the services of Sean Murray, a rising star in garden design. The end result will surely be loved and respected.

Would it be possible to move the War Memorial into the scheme?

I believe that, in years gone by, it was once part of the field. It would be costly, but so worth it, if only on safety grounds.

The only downside is the effect of the ever-increasing traffic build-up in this area.

Parking at Barter Books is always full to capacity, while we have chaos at the Infirmary. The latter is totally inadequate for the combination of staff, hospital visitors, patients and doctors, etc. The result is that those with deadlines for appointments have little option other than to abandon cars and block the footpaths. The canny locals with mobility use the Lidl car park.

Before every scrap of land is developed, could we plan for a Park and Ride in the Lionheart/Willowburn area? And consider an underground facility at Greenwell Road?

I realise that this involves huge investment, but it is never going to get less expensive. It is not an option to do nothing.

Mrs Eileen Woodward,
