PLANNING: Hard to turn down plans

While I agree with the comments made by Peter Armstrong (Gazette, July 27) regarding the probable effect on parking and medical attention caused by the influx of new housing, I would point out that these planning decisions were made by the Northumberland county councillors of the day, the vast majority of whom were not from north Northumberland.

I would also add that under the existing planning laws, it is quite difficult to refuse planning consent for most of these developments and, unfortunately, a lack of adequate infrastructure is not a valid reason.

One can only hope that the current administration will employ a modicum of common sense and amend this legislation.
