Phase one of Spittal Point scheme is dueto start this autumn

Royal Carlton Estates, owned by Berwick businessman William Leith, is planning to build 136 homes and commercial space on the dilapidated site.

A phased approach to the development was approved by Northumberland County Council in May.

Agents Aitken Turnbull, acting on behalf of Mr Leith, now want to discharge a range of conditions associated with planning approval such as its management plan and programme of works, including the widening of North Greenwich Road.

The site will be developed in five distinct phases. The first phase in the south-east corner of the site comprises the delivery of five units and is scheduled to begin this autumn.

Phase two comprises 22 units followed by 27 units in phase three, 14 units in phase four and 68 units in phase 5. In total, there are 27 affordable homes.

A construction method statement accompanying the application anticipates that the phased approach to development will lessen both the environmental impact and impact on neighbours.

The red brick chimney, a prominent landmark, will be retained.

The application is expected to be discussed by Berwick Town Council’s planning committee at its meeting on Tuesday, October 9 at 6.30pm in the town hall.
