Petition launched to bring wonky vegetable boxes up north

Asda has been offering the boxes of misshapen veg in 128 of its shops, as part of a trial. The company says each box, priced £3.50, will be able to feed a family of four for a week.

However, the announcement has left a sour taste in the mouth of Coun Steven Bridgett, who says that the company has failed to include any of its outlets in the North of England or Scotland in the test run. So Coun Bridgett has launched the online petition, addressed to Asda’s chief executive Andy Clarke, calling for things to change.

The petition states: 'There are absolutely no stores beyond Leeds taking part in the £3.50 wonky veg box offer. I would urge you to seriously reconsider your position and allow stores in the North of England and in Scotland to take part and to sell these boxes.'

An Asda spokeswoman said: “Following our trial of wonky veg boxes on Friday we have received some amazing feedback from our customers. We’re working closely with our farmers so we can roll this out in to more stores and in higher volumes in the next few weeks, so more customers can get their hands on some knobbly veg.”
