A pet cat was injured by an illegal trap – which has been outlawed since 1958.

The incident happened last month in Bowsden, north of Lowick, and caused the owners considerable distress.

The instrument is known as a gin trap; a mechanical trap designed to catch an animal by the leg using spring-operated jaws, either with or without a serrated edge or teeth.

Following the incident, local farmers have been warned to keep an eye out for these types of traps and to report anything suspicious to police.

Inquiries are ongoing to determine the owner of the device which injured the cat. Anyone with details should call police on 101, quoting log number 1054 23/03/2018.
