A person has died after being struck by a train in Warkworth this afternoon.
Emergency services were called to a foot crossing on the East Coast mainline in Warkworth at around 2pm but the person was pronounced dead at the scene.
A spokesman for the British Transport Police confirmed the incident was not being treated as suspicious.
Trains were severely delayed throughout the afternoon, with some services up to 90 minutes behind schedule and others cancelled.
The BTP spokesman said: “We were called shortly before 2pm today to reports of a person being struck by a train close to a foot crossing in Warkworth, Northumberland.
“Colleagues from Northumbria Police and North East Ambulance Service also attended, and a person was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Officers are now working to identify the person and inform their family. A file will be prepared for the coroner.”
