“Des (Hood) Taxi collected them for free from Morpeth and has been an amazing asset to our covid response team, delivering medication and food parcels from Powburn to the Scottish border.”

The number of coronavirus cases in the Wooler area is still low. There were 0-4 positive cases in the council ward area in the week up to October 26, with the infection rate at 44.7 per 100,000.

However, the parish council is keen to get the message out that support with food parcels, medication or simply someone needing a chat is available for anyone self-isolating or shielding.

“We’re here for people,” said Cllr Mather.

"The impression I’m getting is that people are just starting to get lonely.

"We’d really like people to make that special effort over the next three or four months to check on their neighbour and make sure that personal touch is there.”

The parish council has also said it will do what it can to provide food to struggling families.

Cllr Mather said: "If anyone is struggling for food, contact the parish council confidentially and we will arrange some form of food support with our covid funds and working with Cllr Anthony Murray.”

The grants of up to £2,000 are to ‘assist recipient organisations to help families who need support’.

Cllr Murray said: “I am hoping we will get a county-wide scheme where we can look after all the young people who need free school meals.”

Cllr Mather added: “It’s probably going to be the Christmas period when there is more concern.”
