The sessions, organised by the Northumbrian Anglers Federation will be held over two long weekends in June and July, at Rothbury and will give those who have never fished before a free taste of the sport.

"Angling is widely recognised to be good for health and wellbeing, particularly during this past 12 months,” said Dennis Hetherington, secretary of the Federation. “There is no better place to be than relaxing by a local river enjoying nature and the countryside in the beautiful county of Northumberland.”

The events will give individuals, friends or families the opportunity to try river angling with an experienced angler by your side to give advice and show you how to cast.

Fishing equipment will be provided and you will not need to buy a fishing licence or permit.

Sessions will last about two-and-a-half hours and are due to be held on Federation water from Thursday, June 3, to Sunday, June 6; and Friday, July 2, to Monday, July 5. There will be no charge.

The project has been supported by an award from the Angling Improvement Fund, which reinvests a share of fishing licence income to improvement projects and activities at fisheries. The fund is administered by the Angling Trust and supported by the Environment Agency.

Other organisations involved in the scheme are Northumberland Rivers Trust, Greys Fishing, Natural England, Shakespeare Fishing and the Northumberland Estates.

Dennis said: “If you are an organisation, maybe you would like to come along in a group as a social event.

“If you are a company or business, you could bring some work colleagues or employees to encourage their wellbeing, try angling and have some fun.”

Contact Dennis if you would like to book a session or require further information on 07955 855 847 or email [email protected]

The Northumbrian Anglers Federation was founded in 1894 to provide affordable fishing to local anglers on some of the best salmon and trout fishing rivers in the North East, and this continues to be its fundamental objective.
