Tributes paid to 'universally liked and respected' former Alnwick teacher

Tributes have been paid to a former Alnwick teacher who has passed away, aged 95.

Mary Creighton was head of home economics at the Duchess’s Girl’s Grammar School and subsequently the Duchess’s High School for over 30 years.

“Former staff and students were saddened to learn of the death of Mary Creighton,” said Roy Todd, in a statement on their behalf.

“Mary spent most of her teaching career in Alnwick and taught the daughters of many of her original students. In fact a number of her colleagues on the Duchess’s staff had been taught by her.

“She was a delightful lady, invariably smiling and a very efficient, well organised classroom manager.

“Mary was universally liked and respected by the girls and her colleagues in the department and was given a rousing farewell at a soiree when she retired in 1983.”

She enjoyed a long and happy retirement in Morpeth.
