Earlier this year, when the government was advising the wearing of face coverings, it proved extremely difficult to obtain any from anywhere. Even the NHS were struggling to purchase any.

A number of Seahouses residents had appointments with GP practices, hospitals and other medical treatment centres where admission was only allowed if face coverings were used. Also, face coverings were required when using public transport to get to some of these vital appointments.

So, determined to meet the challenge, the Seahouses Volunteer Group arranged to obtain patterns and make their own face coverings and distributed them to many individuals and local caring organisations.

Much of the suitable material used was donated to the volunteers, but any cash donations received covered the costs of necessary thread and elastic.

Of course, now, most retail outlets offer face coverings for sale.

However, SVG face coverings can still be obtained from Drift, a popular shop on Main Street. A small donation would be appreciated.

Village News contributor and distributor Kelvin Rushworth said: "With very short notice, I had to go to Boots Opticians in Berwick for an urgent eye test, which had been delayed for over three months. I could not find a required face covering anywhere.

"Amazingly, just before I left Seahouses, I was given a colourful SVG free face covering. Phew! The whole community owes a great debt of gratitude to those wonderful and hard-working volunteers."
