Praise for newly refurbished Alnwick Playhouse

Community leaders have praised the new-look Alnwick Playhouse following its £3.3million restoration.

The bar and gallery have also been refurbished and the rebuilt auditorium incorporating features such as hand rails and seats with ample leg room.

Chris Sayers, chairman of the Alnwick District Playhouse Trust, said: “I really could not be happier with the results. This has been an 18-month project and what we have has really exceeded all our dreams.

“It’s very much like our old Playhouse but with much better leg room, more comfortable seats and better facilities.”

Northumberland County Council has contributed £2.5million towards the cost of the work, with the Playhouse raising a further £800,000.

Peter Jackson, leader of Northumberland County Council, said: “Northumberland County Council has been right at the centre of driving this project. We have not only invested £2.5million but we have supported it on a day to day basis in getting partners together.

“We have created a sustainable community enterprise here in Alnwick which will be here for the next 50 to 100 years.”

Coun Cath Homer, cabinet member for arts, leisure, culture and tourism, added: “Alnwick has always had a really strong sense of community and the Playhouse has always been integral to that but it’s fantastic to see how the community facilities have been expanded. There are other facilities like the library and tourist information service and it’s brilliant to have them here.”
