Poignant painting at site
Berwick Barracks is one of six locations selected for a new nationwide exhibition – Painting our Past: The African Diaspora in England – which will portray people connected with English Heritage sites.
The portrait by Chloe Cox, a young artist of Caribbean heritage from Birmingham, depicts Arthur Roberts (1897-1982), the son of a Trinidadian man. It was unveiled at the site yesterday (Wednesday) and will be on display until November 5.
Arthur Roberts was born in Bristol and brought up in Glasgow. He enlisted with the King’s Own Scottish Borderers regiment in 1917 and fought in the First World War. The regimental base was in the 18th Century barracks at Berwick.
