Instead Alnwick Town Council will be holding a small wreath laying service and to ensure everyone’s safety, the wreath laying ceremony is by invitation only and members of the public are asked not to attend.

Instead the town council is asking residents to pay their respects by taking part in the two minute silence at 11am on Sunday by standing outside their homes.

Mayor Lynda Wearn said: “Whilst this is disappointing to many including the town council, we feel it is the right thing to do.

"We need to keep people safe whist still acknowledging the sacrifice made by so many.

"As well as joining us for the two minutes silence we would ask people to display an image or picture of a poppy in their windows.”

The Garden of Remembrance is now in place at the war memorial so anyone wishing to lay a wreath or leave a poppy is welcome to do so.

Small ceremonies to mark the occasion are also being held in other towns and villages across Northumberland but the same guidance applies.

In Seahouses, parish council chairman Geoffrey Stewart said there would be no road closure but a temporary stop and go system would be in place so a limited service can be held.

"There will be six of us at the memorial on Sunday, with social distancing still in place,” he said.
