HospiceCare North Northumberland was nominated as its charity of the year in 2020 with the aim of raising £25,000 to celebrate the hospice’s 25th anniversary.

Although last year was tough for many due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Estates’ staff were determined to go the extra mile in an attempt to reach their target and held several fundraising events.

One team made and sold bird-boxes, another held a Yoga class for staff, and another baked daily treats selling them for donations in the staffroom.

Staff also organised a seasonal raffle and a Jolly Jumper event, helping swell the final total to £24,516.

Vanessa Proudlock, community engagement officer at Northumberland Estates, said “As well as the fantastic amount raised by the fundraising efforts of the Northumberland Estates team, Alnwick Castle Venture also kindly donated over £12,000 from their castle ticket sales in 2020 which enabled us to reach the final total of almost £25,000.

"HospiceCare has been Northumberland Estates’ first-ever charity of the year and have been a pleasure to work with. We hope that our donation will enable them to continue with their much-needed work in the local community.”

Rebecca Taylor, events and community fundraiser for HospiceCare, said: “We were so excited when we heard the news that we had been adopted by the Northumberland Estates as their charity of the year.

"Given the challenges we have all experienced over the last 12 months we are beyond thrilled that over £24,000 was achieved despite the challenges we have all faced in 2020.

"Besides fundraising for the Hospice, I would like to extend my thanks to the Estates’ staff who volunteered their time to join our retail team to help sort through the hundreds of bags donated during lockdown, which was no mean feat.
