The centre is undergoing a major facelift to improve sports and leisure facilities and create a wellness hub for the local community.

Phase two of the work included the creation of a new state-of-the-art gym and fitness area, and two new fitness studios. There are also new spa facilities and new wet and dry changing rooms.

The final phase of work being funded by the council is now underway, including the creation of a dedicated cycling studio, a new and improved soft play experience and an extended cafe offer, plus a re-designed modern reception area.

Coun Jeff Watson, cabinet member with responsibility for health lives said: “The centre is being transformed with some fantastic exercise facilities and services that will help enhance the health and wellbeing of the local community, whatever their age or fitness level.

“At the beginning of the year the refurbished swimming pool hall, spectator area and modernised changing areas, which formed the first phase of our improvement works, were widely welcomed by local residents.”

The centre is run by Active Northumberland.

Mark Warnes, Interim Chief Executive, said: “The revitalisation and refurbishment work that is ongoing at Blyth Sports Centre is giving it a fresh modern feel and will make it a great place for the people of Blyth and surrounding areas to visit, to be active and to have some fun.

“We are looking forward to April when we hope lockdown restrictions will be eased and we can re-open the doors to those facilities in line with the national roadmap.”

The funding for the centre has been financed by Northumberland County Council as part of an ambitious £65million countywide investment programme to upgrade and transform sport and leisure facilities and to enhance the customer experience.

This includes the building of new leisure centres in Berwick, Morpeth and Ponteland and major investment to refurbish and revitalise centres in Newbiggin and Hexham.
