Fire and explosions lit up Bamburgh Castle as filming took place for the new Indiana Jones movie starring Harrison Ford.

Spectators patiently watching from the beach and dunes saw part of the movie set engulfed in flames, while plumes of smoke could also be seen emerging from the castle grounds.

There were also explosions and the sound of stuntbikes in action, although they remained hidden from public view behind the castle walls.

Dozens of extras could also be seen arriving at the castle.

Local residents were notified in advance ‘that there will be use of atmospheric smoke, special effects fireworks and flares and gunfire sounds’.

It is 40 years since the first Indiana Jones film, ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’, hit cinema screens.

Harrison Ford is reported to be working alongside English actress Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Danish actor, Mads Mikkelsen, on the fifth film of the franchise.

Bamburgh Castle will reopen to the public on Monday, June 14.
