Improvements made at crash site in Stakeford

Work has started on the road in Stakeford which has seen a number of other collisions.

The A1147 was the scene of a serious crash in October 2018 when a car lost control at the Lord Barrington Corner, causing significant damage to a property.

Several other collisions have happened at the same location in recent years and concerns have also been raised by residents about speeding on the stretch of road between Stakeford and Prospect Cottages.

Northumberland County Council has been working closely with local residents and Stakeford county councillor Julie Foster to improve road safety and cut the number of incidents.

Now speed cushions will be installed to slow down traffic, while new bollards have been put in front of the existing guardrail on Half Moon Street at Lord Barrington Corner.

Red “count down” road markings on the approach to the 30mph speed limit on the A1147 at Bomarsund will also be put down while the road will also be resurfaced as part of the scheme.

Coun Foster said: “Residents have complained about speeding traffic along the whole of the 30mph area of the A1147.

“The number of accidents along this road and at the corner next to the Lord Barrington pub shows that these complaints were very much justified.

“Residents were invited to a drop in consultation early last year and I’m really pleased to see the outcome of that consultation now coming to fruition.

"My thanks go to all of the residents who attended the consultation, the officers at the County Council for the design and delivery of the scheme and to Choppington Parish Council for their support.”

Coun John Riddle, Cabinet Member for Local Services, added: “We’re committed to ensuring the county’s roads are safe for all users and finding the best solution to local issues.

“This is a good example of us investigating the root cause of accidents and working with a local ward member to bring in improvements to make the road network safer through our Local Transport Plan.”
