But it all went wrong when George Goddard lost the engagement ring as he made his way to the top of Simonside, near Rothbury, with his girlfriend Isobel Neal.

George, from Durham, explained: “We'd gone to Simonside for the day, for a nice walk and a picnic on the crag. The original plan was for me to propose at the top with the picnic.

“Once I got to the top, I realised that the coat pocket which the ring was in had a very large hole in, and no ring (which was in a bright blue box).

"Normally, I'm the kind of person who is constantly tapping on my pockets to make sure I have everything, but I didn't want it to be obvious.

“So when we got to the top, and Isobel could see me in a mad panic, I did have to explain that I'd dropped it, and that we'd have to redo the walk but we couldn't find it.

“After a few hours, we gave up and started to drive back to Durham. Now having 4G – which I didn't have on the hills – I asked to join the Rothbury facebook group and posted about the incident, with the hope that someone would have seen it, and kept it safe. I was hoping that the kind of person who goes walking in the countryside would be a well-meaning person.

"As it happens, someone had found the ring. They were coming down, and they say that it was right on the middle of the path, and they had posted it on Facebook too. Steven Bridgett, who is in the Rothbury group, had seen this other post, and put the two of us in touch.
