GoFundMe page set up to support owners of a Seahouses pub 'left with nothing' after devastating fire

The page, which has been set up by the couples daughter Sammi Kukk is aiming to raise £1000 – in a bid to try and get the pub back open again as soon as possible.

She said: “I found out about the fire at about 8.15am on Tuesday through a friend. There was a period of about 15-20 minutes where I didn’t know if my parents had got out. It was only when my partner rang me saying my Mam was at our house that I could relax.”

Catherine Gow, who runs the pub with her partner Victor Kukk said they were ‘lucky to be alive’ after the blaze.

Following the fire, Sammi received messages from members of the community on social media encouraging her to set up the GoFundMe page.

She said: “I was unsure about whether to set up the page at first because my Mam and Dad are proud people”, she said. “They are always giving, especially when it comes to raising money for charity. In the end, I thought it would be nice for my parents to see how giving the community can be.

“At the moment they have nothing. It’s the little things such as clothes, car keys and glasses that they have lost, things that you wouldn’t really think about.”

The fire started in the early hours of Tuesday, March 10 when neighbours alerted the fire brigade at around 1.30am – crews from Seahouses, Belford and Alnwick all attended the scene at the corner of North Street and Taylor Street.

Sammi added: “Dad wants to reopen the pub if possible but I think it will be months yet. They just spend £3000 on refurbishing the upstairs with the aim of renting out the rooms. He put his heart and soul into the pub.”

The cause of the blaze is not yet known, with an investigation underway from Northumberland Fire and Rescue Service and Northumbria Police.
