This year was a quieter affair, with a silent switch-on to avoid the usual crowds gathering.

Although residents have missed out on the Mistletoe Fair, food stalls, high-quality entertainment on the street including the Ellington Colliery Band, children’s funfair rides and the mulled wine, there have been many positive comments saying the town looks as spectacular as ever and it is nice that the lights have brought some much-needed joy to the town.

Morpeth Town Council Clerk Tracey Bell said: “Although we have not had the usual build-up to the lights being switched on, which is such a huge event in the festive calendar, I’m pleased that the lights are on and people can enjoy them over the coming weeks.”

Centre manager at Sanderson Arcade, Lottie Thompson, said: “We love this time of year here at the Arcade.

“Although we haven’t been able to host our usual Christmas Lights Switch On event in the town, we do hope everyone enjoys seeing the centre lit up and looking festive.”

She added that the team is ready to welcome shoppers in the run-up to Christmas as non-essential stores have been allowed to re-open.
