Disposable barbecues to be banned from sale at Co-op stores near Northumberland National Park

Last summer, local county councillor Steven Bridgett asked Co-op management to halt their sale, highlighting the fire dangers posed to the Northumberland National Park and surrounding areas.

At the time, he was told that for a ban to be effective, an industry-wide approach across the UK would be necessary otherwise customers would simply travel to an alternative Co-op store, or another retailer, to purchase them.

However, media reports suggested the Co-op has now decided to withdraw disposable barbecues from its 129 stores in national parks.

It prompted Cllr Bridgett to write to the Co-op again with a fresh plea for it to stop selling disposable barbecues from its Rothbury store even though it is just outside the National Park.

Cllr Bridgett, posting an update on his Facebook page, said: “I’m pleased to say that the Cooperative have now reconsidered their position and the sale of disposable barbecues will not only be stopped in their shops inside the National Parks but also those stores that are within a mile of the park boundary. Which includes both Rothbury and Wooler stores.

“Many thanks to the Co-operative for taking on board representations from the local community.

I will be working with the Cooperative, the Northumberland National Park and other partners to look at where we can place permanent barbecue stands in our area, that are safer and more environmentally friendly.”

The Co-op has been approached for comment.
