Daft as a Brush founder reaches Land's End, passing 5,000-mile mark on epic challenge

Brian Burnie has reached Land's End on his 7,000 mile charity trek.

The 75-year-old, who is also dealing with Parkinson’s disease, made it to England’s most far-flung point as Storm Ciara battered Cornwall on Monday.

He has now walked a remarkable 5,009 miles in almost two years.

Brian and his wife, Cheryl, set off on their epic adventure on March 5, 2018 – staying on a converted double-decker bus, dubbed Bluebell.

Brian’s charity, Daft a Brush Cancer Patient Care, offers 30 staffed custom-made vehicles to transport outpatients, free of charge, to and from hospital, where they are undergoing chemotherapy and radiotherapy cancer treatment.

Their dream is to take the charity’s work nationwide.

Brian, former owner of the Doxford Hall estate, near Alnwick, has met with many NHS Trusts to encourage the adoption of the free service and reports that feedback to date has been exceptional.

He said: “The weather here in Lands End is horrendous – and that’s an understatement.

Brian Burnie has now walked over 5,000 miles around the coastline of Britain and Ireland.

“I’m thrilled to have reached this milestone and to have walked over 5,000 miles.

“There’s no chance I could have done this without the support of my dear wife, Cheryl. I must say a huge thank you to everyone who braved these ridiculous conditions to be with us, they’re as daft as I am!”

With around 2,000 miles still to walk, Brian estimates his return to the North East will be this Christmas 2020.
