Coastguard called to suspected ordnance found on Northumberland beach

Amble Coastguards were called to reports of suspected ordnance on Warkworth beach before bomb disposal arrived to inspect the object.

Amble Coastguard rescue team were called to Warkworth beach today, Saturday, February 13 following reports of ordnance being found near the water.

The coastguards located the suspected ordnance and a safety cordon was put into place while the object was being identified by bomb disposal.

Coastguard members were stood down after bomb disposal were unable to identify the item and instructed the team to leave the object where it was.

The public are being ‘strongly advised’ against picking the object up or tampering with it if they come across it.

In a statement on Facebook on Saturday, February 13, Amble Coastguards said: "Following a short search the suspected ordnance was located, where team members took photos of the object which were then passed on to bomb disposal via our Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Humber.

“A safety cordon was put into place whilst the object was being identified by bomb disposal. Though as the item was moving with the tide the cordon was also constantly moving.”

"Bomb disposal were unable to identify the item and instructed the Coastguard to leave the object where it was.

“If members of the public do come across this object the Coastguard are aware of it, though we strongly advise against picking the object up or tampering with it.

“Remember if you see anyone in difficulties at sea or on the coast or spot anything unusual dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard.”
