Bamburgh Research Project, which coordinates the dig, is aiming to have a four-week season during July and August – if Covid-19 permits.

‘Just waiting for things to resolve themselves is not a very practical option now as it will leave us too little time to react, so we think it best to make some cautious plans now.

‘It seems fair to assume that a number of restrictions will still be in place in the summer and should plan accordingly. It is also sensible to have a contingency for travel bans and sudden changes of regulation.’

The team will now work to ensure that the accommodation and the work environment are safe for all taking part.
