Alnwick District Food Bank reveals four-fold increase in demand with over 2,000 parcels handed out

Over 2,000 food parcels have been given to around 150 households in Alnwick and the surrounding area – with a busy Christmas period now anticipated.

By comparison, around 600 food parcels were distributed last year.

Clive Gibson, chairman of trustees, said: “To put into context this means having packed more than 4,500 carrier bags of food, including over 5,500 litres of milk as well as over one ton of meat and potatoes."

In the peak period between April and September, the food bank handed out 1,559 parcels compared to 250 over the same period in 2019.

Clive said: “None of this would have been possible without the goodwill and support of so many in the community who have stepped up to the plate.

"Mention should be made of Alnwick Town Council, local charities and businesses, churches and schools and a host of generous individuals who have donated unprecedented amounts of food and cash.

"As well as meeting our immediate needs we are fortunate that this support secures our future, at a time when demand on our service looks as if it will continue for some time yet.

"Mention should also be made of the many professionals in the health service, education and other bodies who identify need, contact us and help ensure many, who may be reluctant to seek help, do indeed get it.”

Within the last year the food bank has been fortunate to have been given both a fridge and freezer allowing it to offer a wider range of food than before.

“Northumberland County Council have also been supportive in accommodating our needs at our base in Lindisfarne Adult Learning Centre, and we look forward to moving to our new home within the site when alterations are completed,” said Clive.

“Alnwick District Food Bank has kept going throughout the pandemic and, as Christmas approaches, we thank everyone for helping us put food on the tables of vulnerable families, and adults living on their own.

"We are pleased to be able to include festive items for all the family in our Christmas parcels this year. Whether you read this as a supporter or someone who has received help, our message to you all is Happy Christmas.”
