Parish doesn't want to take on play area

Rothbury Parish Council has agreed that it will not take on responsibility for the play area at Whitton View from the Northumberland Estates.

The play area at the housing development was one of the requirements of the planning permission for the estate and has previously been the subject of an ongoing saga due to a delay in it being built.

The Estates had offered to hand over the play area as well as a one-off sum of £20,000 for its maintenance and upkeep.

Members heard that the Estates wanted to pass on the whole site, including the land around the play area and the trees.

Chairman, Coun Caroline Dawson, said: “I think we should let them have responsibility, because we have got enough on our plates.

“This could be a white elephant.”

At the September meeting, Coun Debbie Noble had said: “If we have got the option not to take it on, then I don’t think £20,000 is an awful lot of money for a lifetime commitment.”
