Holy Island Coastguard Rescue Team was tasked by Humber Coastguard just after 1.30pm to a report of two persons cut off by the tide in a vehicle on the causeway.

The casualties stated that water was entering their vehicle and that the vehicle was being moved by the tide.

Berwick Coastguard Rescue Team, Seahouses Inshore Lifeboat and Coastguard Rescue Helicopter 912 were tasked.

Holy Island Coastguard Officers were able to extricate the casualties from the vehicle to a place of safety.

The tide was falling, and the causeway was unsafe to cross between 11.05am and 3.40pm. This car had attempted to cross 1hr and 40minutes outside of the safe crossing times.

A spokesperson for Seahouses RNLI said: “The sea water damage to the vehicle would probably make it a write off, and insurance companies are unlikely to pay out where the driver has been negligent by crossing the causeway when closed by the tide.”

Neither occupant required medical assistance.

People are regularly rescued from the causeway after being cut off by the tide, despite tide times and warning signs clearly posted on both the mainland and island.

Last week, concerns were raised by the emergency services after drone footage captured two vehicles ploughing across the causeway when it was covered by water.
