These include travelling to work when you cannot work from home, to shop for food and essential items and for exercise once a day.

Scotland has toughened its restrictions to include reducing click and collect services to only those deemed essential from Saturday, January 16.

The Prime Minister said he would not rule out imposing stricter rules in England, if required.

This is what you said on the Northumberland Gazette Facebook page about whether or not the rules should be made tougher:

Liz Finch: “No. Give measures time to bed in. If people don't understand and adhere by now, they never will.”

Jo Lunn: “To be fair if folk were sensible and followed them properly we shouldn't need them tightened.”

Caz Rae: “Not necessarily tougher, however some do need to be made clearer, more concise, as some clearly struggle with the vagueness of some of the rules. Personally I try to use common sense, but some do need it written in black and white.”

Dave Hinchcliffe: “Should be tougher. Should be greater protection for shop workers.”

William Baker: “From the very beginning, and sooner. We should NOT be where we are now.”

Garry Driver: “The rules are fine. It’s enforcement that’s the problem. Loads of people still using public transport and not wearing masks.”

Lyn Douglas: “I think the rules are adequate if a little ambiguous. It’s people not adhering to them that is the problem.”

James Clare: “How tougher do they need to be? The advice and rules are to Stay at Home, unless you have to leave for a very small number of essential reasons. It's really not that complicated.”

Mhairi Derby-Pitt: “Yes ... although of people actually followed the current ones, we might not be in such a horrendous situation.”
