Sir Tom died on Tuesday, February 2 after testing positive for Covid-19.

Since then, there have been calls for a lasting public memorial to the war veteran, who raised more than £32million for the NHS in the run-up to this 100th birthday last spring.

Debbie Richardson: "Why can't we have a bank holiday, Captain Tom Day, that way he would be remembered forever, long after we’re gone. He would be remembered for what he did forever.

"I pray we will never have anything like this again but he will be forever in generations to come.”

June Wood: "It may be small but a ward named after Sir Captain Tom in every hospital in the UK or just build a hospital to be called the Sir Captain Tom hospital.

"The regiment that Sir Captain Tom enlisted in could change the name to Sir Captain Tom regiment that can carry on for a lifetime.”

Jean Harvey: "A statue.”
