The memorials in the county are among 50 in the North East to be newly listed. The ones in Northumberland include Embleton; Felton; Eglingham; Horncliffe; Lucker; and Matfen. The others are Greenhead Memorial Cross; Hallington War Memorial; Keenley & Broadside War Memorial; Knarsdale War Memorial; Lambley & Hartleyburn War Memorial; and Humshaugh War Memorial.

Built by communities in the years following the conflict, these memorials are a poignant, physical reminder of the sacrifices and loss the First World War brought about and commemorate the role of communities across the country in the conflict.

One-hundred years on, it is time to come together again to ensure our memorials are in good condition and properly recognised by listing, where appropriate. Historic England, together with the War Memorials Trust and Civic Voice is offering advice, grants and training to help members of the public to submit applications to have their local war memorials listed and repaired where necessary.

Civic Voice will be running a free war memorials workshop in Newcastle on Wednesday, November 23, to train volunteers to survey the condition of their local war memorials.

If you would like to attend the workshop or learn more about the programme, visit the website or call 0151 707 4319 or email [email protected]
