Northumberland Tourism is encouraging residents to enter their village into a television competition – and stand the chance of winning £10,000 for a community project.

Over this summer, Penelope Keith – known for her role in the sitcom The Good Life – and her team of judges will be visiting villages across the UK to determine the winner of the new TV show, Village of the Year 2017.

The series will be screened on Channel 4 and people are being urged to apply if they think their village should be considered for the programme.

In order to apply, email the team with some basic information about your village.

The Village of the Year team will then be in touch to request more information.

After that, those involved in the show will review the applications and, if your village is selected for the shortlist of around 76 villages, you will be informed and the team will arrange a day when it can come and film at your village.

The programme will be grouping its villages into four broad regions of the UK depending on the spread of applications.

Each region will have one winning village that will go through to a grand final with an opportunity to win the £10,000 prize.

A spokesman for the show said: “We know villages are one of the best things about our country and we look forward to celebrating them in Village of the Year 2017.”

Applicants must either live or work in the village which is put forward for consideration.

The closing date for applications is midnight on May 14.
