Northumberland Tourism Awards: Tourism Pub category backed by tech giant
A communications giant is getting behind the inaugural Northumberland Tourism Awards, with BT signed up as sponsor of the Tourism Pub of the Year category.
This award looks to celebrate and recognise any pub that makes a significant contribution to tourism in its area.
This is just one prize of 15 to be presented at the awards, launched last month by Northeast Press’ four county titles – the Northumberland Gazette, Berwick Advertiser, Morpeth Herald and News Post Leader, in association with Northumberland Tourism, the county’s destination management organisation.
Simon Roberston, BT’s North East regional partnership director, said: “BT is proud to sponsor the Northumberland Tourism Awards. And personally, I am pleased and proud to support this fantastic event which recognises and showcases the hard work and achievements of Northumberland businesses.
“As someone who lives and works in the county, there will doubtless be many nominees I have heard of, visited and enjoyed, but I’m looking forward to discovering new places to visit, many of which I’m sure I will also recommend to visiting friends and family.
“BT is responsible for supporting communities and businesses across Northumberland to use the power of communications and technology to help them to thrive and prosper. Our multibillion-pound, UK-wide, commercial investment in fibre broadband and our partnership with Northumberland County Council in the iNorthumberland programme has brought the high-speed technology to nearly 150,000 homes and businesses across the county. The roll-out continues and there are plans to go further.
“Superfast fibre broadband offers huge benefits and is helping our local economy to flourish. Better, faster communications are helping local restaurants, pubs and visitor attractions use social media more effectively and offer free wifi to visiting customers. Local food producers, hotels and events can potentially access a global audience attracting customers or visitors from the length and breadth of the country and beyond.

“I am looking forward to presenting the Tourism Pub Award on the night and wish all those shortlisted in every category the best of luck.”
As well as celebrating the best of Northumberland’ businesses and attractions, the winners will be entered into the North East England Tourism Awards, which take place each November.
With that in mind, the award categories mirror those in the regional contest: Boutique Accommodation/Small Hotel; Bed and Breakfast; Dog Friendly Business; Holiday Park; Hotel; Inclusive Tourism; Large Visitor Attraction; Self-Catering Property; Small Visitor Attraction; Sustainable Tourism Award; Taste Award; Tourism Pub of the Year.
Additionally at our awards, there will be prizes for the best Wedding Venue, Family Day Out (public vote) and an overall prize.
There are separate entry forms for all the different categories, complete with guidance on how to fill them in from Northumberland Tourism, and they all can be downloaded here – tinyurl.com/kk7c2zwThe forms must be returned to firstname.lastname@example.org with the subject Northumberland Tourism Awards by Saturday, May 27. This deadline has been extended after the awards were put back a fortnight because of a clash with the General Election. A shortlist will be published on Thursday, June 1.
