Supermarket giant Tesco has announced plans to close 43 stores in the country, including one in Northumberland.
The Bedlington superstore is one of the victims but Amble’s Tesco Express has survived the axe, which will see 2,000 staff lose their jobs. The Tesco Express stores at Whitley Bay and York Road Hartlepool are two others in the region earmarked for closure.
Earlier this month, Tesco shelved plans to build a new store in Amble, north of Queen Street and adjacent to the Braid, one of 49 across the country that were pulled by the company.
The fate of the Bedlington supermarket, which fronts onto the town’s Market Place, has been sealed eight years after plans were made to expand and modernise it. Eight years ago, Tesco announced plans for what was described at the time as the biggest single investment in Bedlington’s history.
But now the supermarket chain is to close the doors on the store on April 4.
Tesco chief executive Dave Lewis said: “In January, I announced that our performance as a business has fallen significantly short of where we would want it to be and that to protect the future of the business in the UK we would close 43 unprofitable stores. It is with great sadness that I have to tell you that our Bedlington store is one of the 43 we plan to close.
“The decision to close the store has been exceptionally difficult to take. I recognise it will affect many hard-working colleagues, our customers and the local community.
“Our priority is to explain what this announcement means for our colleagues and wherever possible, offer them alternative roles with Tesco. I would like to thank all our customers who have shopped in our store.
“We will continue to do our best to serve them through our alternative stores and our dotcom service.”
The company is currently informing staff at all affected stores.
The Express and Home Plus stores will close on March 15 with the Tesco Metros and Superstores on the list closing on April 4.
In total, 18 Express, 12 Metro, seven superstores and six Homeplus stores are shutting their doors.
